Cat Power w/Xray Eyeballs
6:30 pm
Webster Hall
125 E 11th St
New York, NY
$35
Cat Power is the stage name of singer/songwriter Chan Marshall. Known for her minimalist style, sparse guitar and piano playing, and breathy vocals she has been places in the genres of Folk rock, indie rock, indie pop, and sadcore. After dropping out of high school, she started performing under the name Cat Power while in Atlanta, backed by musicians Glen Thrasher, Marc Moore, and others. While in Atlanta, Marshall played her first live shows as support to her friends’ bands. Her performances are unique and said to stop time.
Xray Eyeballs is the brainchild of O.J. Felipe originally from San Francisco, but after numerous cross-country adventures, he landed himself in Brooklyn around 2000. Upon settling here, O.J. quickly cemented himself in the underground Brooklyn punk, noise, and indie scene playing in numerous bands. With Xray Eyeballs, O.J. wanted to explore something different and make more pop songs that kids could also remember after leaving the party.
Mute Math w/Saint Motel
6:30 Pm
Mercury Lounge
217 E Houston St # A
New York, NY
$20
The explosive, cinematic, hard-pop band Saint Motel is, to put it best, hard to resist, and damn fun. In the world of Saint Motel, nothing bows to convention: Stages become forests and living rooms, and shows become kaleidoscopic mind explosions in 3D. This theatrically creative world is due in large part to the fact that the gentlemen of Saint Motel formed in film school. The band’s keen visual sensibility has yielded an array of stunningly original videos that accompany songs from their recently released debut EP ForPlay, released via the band’s label On The Records, and the physical or digital version of ForPlay includes the free added bonus of the beautiful, ultra-conceptualized videos for each song.

Brad Oberhofer, frontman of the indie-rock outfit Oberhofer, is just 19 years old, and on “Awy Frm U”, he exhibits a pretty good understanding of the duality of rejection. He seems to understand how it both hurts and provides a fresh start. There’s nervousness in his voice– bolstered by ramshackle guitars and a sugar-rushed drum beat that build to an inescapably joyous climax– but instead of conveying dread, Oberhofer sounds like he’s expressing the kind of happy, life-affirming jitters you get when waiting on line for a roller coaster, or when you win concert tickets on the radio. Ah, youth.

This show is frakkin’ awesome! It’s a space drama that’s not too spacey or sci-fiey. Awesome actors. Great writing. EDWARD JAMES OLMOS motherfrackers! Hot chicks and, I’ve been told, sexy dudes. Robots. No monster of the week type villains. Lots of fighting in space jets. It’s an engaging, tense and exciting show that’s a whole lot of fun to watch. Wikipedia calls it: a military science fiction serial drama television series. Kind of like The West Wing…in space…with more fighting.
+There’s tons of drinking on the show so come prepared for drinking games!
+Cylon Raider cookies for you to destroy…with your mouth!

The Star Debate: Trek vs. Wars
5:15 Pm
Ellen Stewart Theater at La Mama
66-68 4th Street
New York, NY
$15 adv $18 dos
With the Star Debate, Epic Win Burlesque’s co-producers Schaffer the Darklord and Nelson Lugo host a sexy symposium to settle one of the most impassioned nerd arguments of our time: Which science fiction franchise is superior, Star Trek or Star Wars? The hosts will each present a case for their chosen franchise, calling upon New York City’s finest and foremost burlesque beauties to illustrate their points.
Leading the charge for Team Trek will be New York vaudevillian Nelson Lugo, with evidence provided by tantalizing Trekkies Lefty Lucy, Miss Mary Cyn, Victoria Privates, Hazel Honeysuckle, and Fem Appeal. The sexy support will span the Star Trek series — from Kirk and Uhura to Data to 7 of 9 — and will even include the starship Enterprise itself.
Arguing on behalf of Star Wars will be nerdcore rapper Schafer the Darklord and his team of sultry Siths Magdalena Fox, BB Heart, Nasty Canasta, Hard Corey, and Rosey La Rouge. Here, too, evidence will come from across the Star Wars spectrum and will include appearances by Han Solo, Princess Leia, Queen Amidala, and Darth Maul.
Since Epic Win Burlesque’s hosts will play the parts of opposing counsel, the audience will play the part of jury. Indeed, each evening’s winner will be determined by audience vote, and although there can be only one victor, all of the nerds in attendance will unite and rejoice in the majestic spectacle of space boobs.
While science fiction enthusiasts will likely line up for the Star Debate, those unfamiliar with the Star Wars/Star Trek controversy will still be entertained by the vaudevillian elements of the show, from lively banter, song and dance, and sexy striptease. This is a show that Wired.com called unabashedly nerdy, and often unabashedly naked…with creative performances, good costuming (or lack thereof) and an indomitable nerd spirit. (Fringe Fest)

Just A Band w/ Analogue Transit
10:00 Pm
Drom
85 Ave A
New York, NY
$10 adv $15 dos
Just A Band, the trio of Billy “Blink” Selanga, Dan Muli, and Jim Chuchu, are redefining the sound of Kenyan music in the 21st century, with their exciting mix of disco/electro/African funk. They’ve been exciting crowds all over Nairobi, and it’s finally the chance for New Yorkers to experience the band that’s responsible for what Fast Company called “Kenya’s first viral music video” for the song Ha-He.
It’s African music, but not that traditional tribal sound that you think about when you usually think of African music. This song could bump in pretty much any international lounge scene and wouldn’t be out of place. The synth work is
impressive, and when they declare that they’re gonna “huff and puff and blow the house down,” you can hear an uncanny undertone of malice, joy, and swag in equal amounts.

Cameron Stallones began his musical career as a founding member of the experimental psychedelic rock collective Magic Lantern. Soon after, demos originally intended to light the Lantern became the first Sun Araw LP: The Phynx. Sun Araw blossomed as a solo project in attempted geosynchronous orbit with the Eternal Now: oblique six-dimensional transmissions from changeless environs.
Drawing from a collective mine of times and spaces, Prince Rama (made up of sisters Taraka and Nimai Larson) takes the threads of ancient symbolism and ritual and weaves a surreal universe that is wholly their own. Their often-unpredictable live shows graze the space between psychedelic ceremony, performance art and initiation rite. TRUST NOW, their 5th full-length album and 2nd album to be released on Paw Tracks was born out of this fantastic ritual space.

Slowdance bring keyboard and guitar and a rhythm section that can flip from a new wave throb to a spaghetti western rumble as easily as it delivers punchy indie-pop, all anchored by vocalist Quay Quinn-Settel’s demure cheek and soprano dramatics. She recalled France Gall, and they did Stereolab, because language still counts (even the set-closing cover of New Order’s “Consent” was not without its tie to France). Says Quinn-Settel: “I learned how to read in French before learning in English. It’s half of me, it wouldn’t feel right to sing in English alone. Plus the way the language shapes the mouth changes the timber of my voice, so it’s nice to have both.”

BROTHERS w/SEAN BONES, NAT BROWER & THE THUNDER, BABY BROTHER
8:00 Pm
Union Hall
702 Union St
Brooklyn, Ny
$10
Brothers come in all different forms. Southern-Virginia natives Billy Sorrentino, Mike O’Rourke and Blaine O’Brien have spent enough time sharing bands, vans and stages over the past 15 years to be practically related. Meanwhile, halfway across the country, a pair of actual brothers-identical twins Damon and Dylan Boelte-were rocking Greater Oklahoma. These two fraternal forces united in New York a few years ago, when Billy met Dylan working in the art department at the music magazine BLENDER. Now, as BROTHERS, they’re bringing back the kind of soulful, scuzzy, harmony-soaked country and rock & roll that made the ’60s and ’70s so sexy-back when the barn was stocked with whiskey, bands knew how to dance, and bros were bros. The band’s debut album, recorded live to tape with an 8-piece line-up, will be released this summer. Ten solid tracks of stompin’, clappin’, hootin’, hollerin’, boozin’, lootin’, easy-ridin’ rock ‘n roll.

Stop by the bar, where Chef Shwa will be slinging his original cocktails crafted especially for this party, and then jump back into the glowing mess of people to meet your fellow party animals. Habitable Spaces presents: End of Summer Bash and Benefit at the Flux Factory
6:00 Pm
Flux Factory
39-31 29th Street
Queens, NY
free
Come on down to support the Habitable Spaces project at the Flux Factory. The evening will feature a colorful mix of bands, DJs, performance artists, and of course — tacos and tasty cocktails. A silent art auction will be held throughout the night.
The Habitable Spaces project is a series of visionary structures that will be built in rural Texas. It will stretch the notion of sculpture, livable space, and home by incorporating a self-sustaining approach to every aspect of living, building, and creating.
The combination of art and self-sustainability will merge together as the artists live off the land and experience how everyday life affects artistic practice. Harvesting and producing food will spill into collaborative ideas within each artist’s habitable space creating a larger dynamic installation piece that changes and flows with its inhabitants and community throughout the seasons.

Salsa Sundays with the Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra
6:00 Pm
Brooklyn Bowl
61 Wythe Avenue
Brooklyn, NY
$5
The Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra is a thrilling 11-piece salsa group which forgoes the standard repertoire, instead playing dynamic, dura arrangements of indie rock tunes we love. No bananas in the hair; this is innovative, astonishing salsa with a new, vibrant aesthetic. With an ever-evolving set list that includes songs by Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio, Animal Collective, Spoon and many more, the WSO has taken the typical salsa form and infused it with a completely modern identity. The explosive arrangements have established the band as an groundbreaking force in the New York underground and have led to a high-profile open-ended residency at The Brooklyn Bowl, bringing the big band sound back to Brooklyn after decades of absence.

Morrissey & Smiths Night
10:00 pm
Sway
305 Spring St (between Hudson and Varick Sts)
New York, NY
Ever since Merseybeat started ferrying itself across the Atlantic in the early ’60s (not to mention the rise of some little combo called the Beatles), New York City has been in the midst of a love affair with British popular music. But there are few bands that inspire the kind of devotion that the Smiths, in particular lead mopester Morrissey, do. The proof can be found at Sway’s long-running, ridiculously popular Sunday-night shindig devoted to the Manchester band, helmed by Ben Cho and Gang Gang Dance’s Brian DeGraw. It’s packed every week, so get there early, or you’ll be stuck humming “What Difference Does It Make?” to yourself.
Double Down’s Third Annual Jello Wrestling to Beat Breast Cancer Benefit

Or simply come and cheer for your favorite delinquent-turned-wrestler for the day. Twisted, punk rock fun for a great cause. Spectators can bet on wrestlers and win great prizes from our sponsors.
Nurse Jen serves up drink specials for all, and guest emcees are Our Lady of Perpetual PMS & Referee Mike SOS from Gorgeous Ladies of Bloodwrestling. This is a mixed event. We reserve the right to remove or dismember any assholes or douchebags disrupting the spirit of good-natured fun.
