?uestlove w/ Gary Clark Jr., Abstract Verses, LTC, Voss
9:00 pm
The Blockley
3801 Chestnut Street
Philadelphia, PA
$8.00 – $12.00
?uestlove (pronounced “Questlove”) is the stage name of Ahmir Khalib Thompson, born January 20, 1971 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, an African-American musician, DJ, Journalist, and record producer, best known as the drummer for hip-hop band The Roots. ?uestlove’s peerless drumming, production and engineering work is regarded bar none by music critics as some of the most innovative work seen in Urban Music. He has also produced for artists such as Common and D’Angelo and member of the production teams Grand Negaz and The Grand Wizzards.
Gary Clark Jr. began playing guitar at the ripe young age of 12. Born and raised in Austin, TX, Gary continued to play small gigs through his early teens until one day he was noticed by the legendary Clifford Antone, owner of the notable Austin blues club Antone’s.
Abstract Verses is the live band that stemmed from rapper Vice Verse’s concept album Cookinville, which was produced primarily by Mark Ziffer and Julian Kantor electronically. Upon playing together for some time and converting the electronic based hip-hop album to a live performance, the band has since branched from the constraints of its origins and developed a voice of its own.

El Ten Eleven w/ The Globes, Prussia
8:00 Pm
Johnny Brenda’s
1201 N. Frankford Ave
Philadelphia, PA
$12
LA’s El Ten Eleven make a danceable racket that’s all the more impressive for being the product of a duo, albeit a power-duo armed with double-necked guitars, basses and a pedal board that probably needs its own trailer. DFA 1979 and Ratatat are obvious antecedents, but these guys place a greater emphasis on layering and manipulating loops on top of a consistently bodyrocking beat
Hailing from Spokane, Washington, The Globes formed in their teenage years, spending afternoons in their sleepy city collaboratively dissecting and interpreting the fundamentals of songwriting, experimentation and craft while forging together their own musical inspirations to fabricate a singular and precocious sound based on the traditional guitar, bass, drum lineup.
Prussia’s music is energetic, poppy- and melodious. You feel like dancing, though there’s noway in hell you would describe this as dance music. Waltzes, African drum beats, acapella breakdowns, and the gentle ringing of sleigh bells all fit into their unique arrangements naturally.

ERIK RANSOM- actor, musician, composer, performance artist and amateur evolutionary biologist. When he isn’t covered in blood, Erik is glamming up the Northeast with his original electro-pop/rock compositions.
WORDZ THE POET EMCEE- With the completion of 6 original albums and presently working on other independent recording projects, he is featured in numerous localopen-mics, showcases, and concerts throughout the US. Wordz the poet emcee has also been featured on many TV and radio shows both locally &
nationally, including Philly Word Live, 88.7 FM, 96.5 AM, “In Bed With Butch,” “106th and Park,” and has also appeared on the cover of Original Plumbing Magazine.
BIRTH NOISE Philly’s Birth Noise might have come into the world kicking, but it certainly didn’t do any screaming. In fact, the young band has yet to
even utter its first word. But don’t hold your breath: the noisy trio—reportedly featuring former members of Mass Movement of the Moth, Ingrid, Sick Weapons and Des Ark—deals in dense instrumentals.

Audiences have laughed, cried and been strangely aroused as he croons about depression and dirty jokes. He is currently working on his debut ep: ‘Disthymia Jams, vol. 7?.

Two Handed Engine w/Alec Gross, Pinegrove
8:00 Pm
M Room
15 W. Girard
Philadelphia, PA
$8
Roots-laced garage and jangly, guitar rock collide when Two Handed Engine’s music drops the proverbial hammer. The band operates out of a row home basement in Germantown; a neighborhood with a gritty, post-industrial vibe that runs right up next to the bucolic scenery of Fairmont Park. The contrasting environment creates a good analogy for Two Handed Engine’s music, which holds the rural, freewheeling influences of the Basement Tapes and early Wilco in tension with a harder, more urban sound…

The Men w/Whatever Brains, Night Sins, Streetwalkers
7:00 Pm
Kungfu Necktie
1248 N Front Street
Philadelphia, PA
$8-$10
The Men yes, “The,” are a four-piece post punk outfit from Brooklyn, NY. Their catalog, which began in 2008 with a hand-dubbed self-released demo cassette, has grown to include two LP’s?—?We Are the Men and Immaculada?—?two more tapes, and a 7-inch. They have toured three times, played over 75 shows and have grown a following of die hard fans crowding into living rooms and basements throughout the five boroughs, desperately trying to see them. The buzz in their hometown has grown so fervent that the Village Voice debuted this album’s first single, “Bataille,” a full six months before the record was scheduled to street.
The Ettes w/Heavy Cream, Hans Condor
9:00 Pm
M Room
15 W. Girard
Philadelphia, PA
$10
Up-front, fearless vocals, fuzz bass runs, primal, driving drums beats, searing guitar lines and of course, tons of black eyeliner and attitude. Female attitude. Lead singer/lyricist Coco Hames channels the best and sassiest of ’60s Girl Group vixens – the leatherette clad bad girl rockers who teased their hair and the boyz – but she and Ettes’ co-founder Poni would definitely kick your ass themselves before waiting for their boyfriend to get back. And you better believe they’d be riding alongside the Leader of the Pack rather than in his sidecar. Or, better yet, they’d be leading their own hot Russ Meyer-esque outlaw girl bike gang/rock band.

God Is An Astronaut, Monogold
8:00 Pm
Johnny Brenda’s
1201 N. Frankford Ave
Philadelphia, PA
$12
God is an Astronaut are a 4 piece who hail from Glen of the Downs, Ireland. Taking their name from a line in Clive Barker’s film ‘Nightbreed’, the band was formed by twin brothers Niels Kinsella and Torsten Kinsella. After recording their first demos, and with numerous labels offering deals, they instead decided to set up their own label ‘Revive Records’ to release their debut album ‘The End of the Beginning’ in 2002. This crucially allowed the band to remain in complete creative control. Speaking on their debut, which was originally intended as the bands farewell to the music industry, the band say “we just wanted to finish on a release we were really proud of, we had no expectations at all.” Over the next couple of years after the album’s low key release, the band started to pick up interest mainly through word of mouth on-line, with rave reviews on blogs leading to both video singles from the album “The End of the Beginning” and “From Dust to the Beyond” receiving airplay across Europe on MTV. This was when the world was first exposed to the bands strong usage of visuals to enhance their music.
Monogold’s melodies soar like an eagle on top of a rollercoaster on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. Why would there be a rollercoaster on Mount Kilimanjaro? You see things that are there and say, “Why?” But I see things that are not and say, “Why not?” Or, something like that.
Phreak N’ Queer Presents: Homo-Rama

“Phreak N’ Queer Arts & Music Festival” takes Philadelphia by storm this summer from August 4th – 7th. Toss out everything you have seen in the LGBTQ community and imagine events free from Top 40/commercialism and chock full o’ talented local artists and performers crafting enough culture to last you all year long.
The Shondes-The Shondes make bold, brassy lonely-heart rock with the snarl and swoon of classic ’90s Northwestern indie–all riot grrl bluster, K Records sentimentality, and a keening, wailing violin that’s more Nirvana Unplugged than Raincoats unhinged… Separating themselves from Sleater-come-latelys, the Shondes have a little bit of steampunky clatter underneath their crunching riffs and a keen ear towards the Jewish music that raised each of its four members. (The Village Voice)
Trophy Wife-Composed of two D.C. transplants, drummer Katy Otto (Exotic Fever Records founder, formerly of Del Cielo) and guitarist Diane Foglizzo, Trophy Wife is a two-headed dragon. Fierce guitar and furious drums, interlocked and driving. Two complementary voices; sometimes they sing, sometimes they scream.
Bennie E- If Sgt. Sass is the beating heart of Philly’s queer hip-hop scene, then BENNI E is the blood pulsating through it…Like many queer rap artists including Sgt. Sass, Benni is taking the hip-hop’s homophobia and spinning gold out of hate. Consciousness doesn’t have to mean boring
SGT SASS-”Every verse I spit is a picture painted / My words never fade, they can’t be duplicated.” declares emcee DT over the classic industrial track, “Dig It” by Skinny Puppy. Philadelphia’s Sgt. Sass is back with a revamped distinct and unconventional blend of hip-hop on their newest mixtape, Art Fggt/Fggt Art.
KEVIN & SETH from FINGER-BANGER!-Finger-Banger is the monthly creation of four queer guys who were bored with the city’s nightlife and decided to birth a child. This baby is the wildest monthly event you will experience. A mix of Punk, Electro, Grunge, 90s Alt, Riot Grrrl, Booty poppin Jams and more.
