Tyler the Creator will Inherit the Earth
I’ve always felt like there was a strange contradiction in hip hop. It is quite possibly the most creative, intense genres of music to exist and it is dominated and swayed by some of the most unimaginative people alive. Don’t start yelling at your screen. What I’m saying is, out of all music scenes, it seems to be the one most concerned with conforming to what works. Where most rock bands feel the need to claim a nonconformist badge, rappers tend to be terrified to be out of step with what’s going on. The result of this insecurity are trends that are dragged on for years until you want to pop a cap in your own dome. At least 10 years of performers mugging in a fish eye lens, thousands of southern hip hop club clones, another song with the dreaded auto tune.
It’s a scene that’s seemed pretty bleak for a while now. But as is so often the case, the future is the children. OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) is a teenage skate rat hip hop collective that could give a shit about what Lil Jon is doing and doesn’t need to take cues from Rick Ross. Their breakout leader, Tyler the Creator is barely entering his twenties and has four albums under his belt. Not since Kool Keith donned his Doctor Octagon persona has there been such a dark, twisted and original indie rapper.
Within 5 seconds of hearing the song French (posted below) I was SOLD.
