Spoek Mathambo – Control
Spooky groove
I’ve burned all the pictures and destroyed all the evidence, but when pressed I’ll admit the ugly truth.
I was a teenage goth.
When I was 14 I remember hanging out listening to Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures LP over and over and over again; in particular, the droning, minimalist bassline and mechanical beat of ‘She’s lost control‘.
Well more than a decade later, the song still has a place in my heart, but I’ll also admit I’m partial to Johannasberg native’s Nthato James Monde Mokgata/AKA Spoek Mathambi’s cover. Maybe it’s because I’m more interested in shaking my ass rather than hanging out in attics these days, but I think the tribal percussion and “creepy-but-danceable groove” just kind of nail it.
I think Ian would have dug it. Check it out.
