I was walking through one of the last standing TLA Video stores the other day with a friend of mine. I strolled past the entrance to the “adult” section. While it is in a separate room, the wall along the entrance allows customers to see some of the xxx titles. Part of this is due to space constraints, but I’m sure the other part is to entice customers into that area. Like every person that enters that store, I slowed down to see the lovely faces (or asses) that were on display. A beautiful pale brunette was staring back from a DVD case. Most girls, and in the right company, many guys will pretend that they don’t know who porn stars are. They are our country’s secret celebrities. But I’m not going to pretend I didn’t recognize the face. It was the beautiful Stoya. Then I realized there was a whole shelf of Stoya DVDs. She was the only porn star who had her own section. I pointed it out to my friend. “She’s a Philly girl” he said. “Even when bad girls make good, Philly doesn’t forget.”

I kinda had a moment when he said that. Philadelphia has a rep for being such a dirty, mean town. I feel like it’s part of a mass insecurity felt by it’s residents. It’s one of the largest cities in the country, but stands in the shadow of New York and D.C.. Philly is where the weather man puts his arm when he’s talking. But because of that chip on it’s shoulder, Philly really does take care of it’s own and breeds that back into the people who leave. Whether it’s Will Smith, Kevin Bacon or… Stoya, our celebrities carry that sense of strange protective pride. This divine sex star regularly comes back. Not as a jaded gold plated porn starlet, but as a down to earth Philly girl.

On December 11th, Stoya will be making an appearance here in town. Not swinging a pole for skeevy douche bags at Delilah’s or Club Risque, but art modeling at Dr. Sketchy’s. She’s in town for the holidays, it’s what cute Philly girls do.
